Mattingly Messina

Founder, Throughline

Mattingly Messina is the founder of Throughline, a consultancy that puts relationships at the center of philanthropy. He helps organizations treat their relationships as their greatest asset and build financial models that leverage them as much as possible.

Mattingly cares deeply about organizations that are place-based.  He believes that in order to support environmental sustainability, fundraising must be sustainable itself. That eye toward long-term outcomes is what fuels his work. While specializing in educational fundraising, he and Throughline also provide pro bono support to a number of place-based organizations, including one of the largest equine therapeutic centers in the country and a new nonprofit focused on land ownership and financial literacy as tools to address the intergenerational racial wealth gap.

Mattingly’s career spans development, strategic communications, and high-stakes negotiations. As a former legal negotiator for Google, he built trust with a number of counterparts across civil and regulatory jurisdictions. That experience furthered his belief that strong relationships are the most durable currency in leadership and fundraising.

He takes great pride in serving as a trustee of his alma mater, St. Margaret’s Episcopal School, where he previously led the Alumni Association and grew an alumni-driven endowment fund to support tuition sustainability—an effort rooted in access, equity, and stewardship. He also serves on the Programs Committee of the Association of Fundraising Professionals Golden Gate Chapter. Based in San Francisco, California, Mattingly holds a B.A. from the University of California, Berkeley.
